Building Your House Upon the Rock
By: Fernando Diaz(Matthew 7:24-29)
One day I was having a conversation with my father-in-law outside on his front yard, and I asked him how important is it for a house or a building to have a solid foundation. I already knew the answer, but since my father-in-law works as a construction foreman, and has been at that job for many years, I wanted to hear it from his professional point of view.
As he looked towards his house, he says to me, “it’s vitally important for a house to have a solid foundation. If there’s no foundation, the house wouldn’t hold up in its position, and then the house would crumble down. There has to be a solid foundation.”
The Lord Jesus Christ himself made that point clear of us the Church having a solid foundation. In His parable of the two builders, one wise man who built his house upon the rock and one foolish man that built his house upon the sand. The house that was built upon the rock endured the storm and the house remained intact, but the house that was built upon the sand was destroyed by the storm. All this is a picture of daily Christian living and where the object of Faith must be in.
The Rock on which the house was built on is a type of Christ; Jesus said in Matthew 16:18: “…upon this Rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” The Apostle also wrote the following: “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1Cor. 3:11) To withstand the storm that comes your way daily, but as well from the deception of false doctrine, your house must be built upon Jesus Christ and Him Crucified. It’s about understanding and accepting what Christ accomplished at Calvary’s Cross with childlike faith that will make one a “wise builder”. The storms may come, and not only from the spiritual realm, but as well from the world and religion, but as long as your house is on the Solid Foundation (Christ and the Cross) your house won’t be destroyed. It may have a few dents, and maybe some broken windows, but your house won’t be moved!
But sadly there are many in the Modern Church that prefer to build their house on the sand; as good the “message” may sound and as popular the preacher may be, but if it’s not taking the Church back to the finished work of Christ at the Cross for Sanctification, then it is not a solid foundation, it is just only sand. That is why the Lord called the man that built his house upon the sand a “foolish man.” Foolish because already knowing the danger of building a house with no solid foundation, he built his house anyway, losing it along the way.
How many Christians ignore the danger signs of trying to function outside of the Cross, thinking that they can obtain victory through their works, or try to live for the Lord by their own abilities?
We see another perfect example in the New Testament with the Churches of Galatia; the Apostle Paul established the churches in that region on the foundation of Christ Crucified (Gal. 3:1), but soon afterwards the Galatians embraced another gospel which prompted the Apostle to scorn the Galatians, calling them “foolish Galatians.”
The Oxford Dictionary defines the word foolish as “lacking good sense or judgement; unwise.” There is also a word in the Greek that describes a foolish action, it is anoetos, and it is found in the New Testament six times. It means “not understood, unintelligible, not understanding, unwise, foolish.”
Now don’t get me wrong, there are those that do love the Lord and are sincere in what they are trying to do, but they are sincerely wrong. There is no excuse for building your house upon the sand, you can’t bargain with the Lord, but He loves you that much that He will always have the door open for those that truly want a renewing change in their hearts upon repentance.
If you’re tired of your house being blown down by the storm, start building your house upon the Rock. In other words, come to the Cross by Faith, and you will always come out Victorious and you won’t be moved from that Solid Foundation, no matter what may come your way.
